Mandela Barnes

Former Wisconsin Lieutenant Governor

Mandela Barnes was elected in 2018 as the first African-American to serve as Wisco​nsin’s 45th Lieutenant Governor, also becoming the second African-American to hold statewide office. Previously, Barnes served two terms in the Wisconsin State Assembly where he was Chair of the Legislature’s Black and Latino Caucus and became a recognized leader on progressive economic policies and gun violence prevention legislation. Barnes founded The Long Run to support diverse and groundbreaking pro-democracy candidates around the country, and he has also worked on political campaigns, in the city of Milwaukee mayor’s office, and as an organizer for Milwaukee Inner City Congregations Allied for Hope.
